GEO knowledge base
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO does not replace SEO and is not a trick for manipulating a language model. It is a way to make reliable information easier to understand and cite in generative search experiences.

- SEO foundations: Crawlability, indexing and internal links remain necessary.
- Answer quality: Clear definitions, examples, sources and limitations increase usefulness.
- Entity clarity: Consistent names and relationships help machines understand who is publishing.
How does GEO differ from traditional SEO?
Traditional SEO optimises for discovery, indexing and positions in search results. GEO also considers whether an answer model can understand and summarise the information and connect it to a reliable source.
- Direct answer blocks
- Source links and publication method
- Organization and Person entities
- AI citation and brand mention measurements
Why GEO cannot guarantee a mention
AI answers differ by model, prompt, date, location and available sources. A system can crawl a page without citing it. GEO improves the conditions, not the guarantee of an outcome.
- Models and indexes change
- Not every question uses web sources
- A website cannot force source selection
- A brand mention is not always a source citation
The five building blocks of GEO
GEO is not one setting. It is the interaction between technical access, a recognisable publisher, a useful answer, verifiable evidence and a measurement method. Each building block helps make a source understandable, but none can force a mention on its own.
If a building block is missing, information may still be found, but it becomes harder to establish the origin, meaning or impact of a change. A careful approach therefore checks the foundations first and only then adds new content or measurements.
- Access: stable URL, correct status and indexable HTML
- Entity: consistent organisation, people and relationships
- Answer: a self-contained, understandable explanation
- Evidence: primary sources or transparently described proprietary data
- Measurement: recorded prompt, system, date and source URL
From vague promises to verifiable information
A statement such as ‘our GEO approach makes AI systems mention you more often’ does not show what is implemented, how a mention is identified or what uncertainty exists. Such a sentence is therefore not a useful method and must not be presented as a guaranteed result.
A verifiable description states that selected pages are checked for accessibility, organisation and authorship are made visible, source references are added and a fixed prompt set is measured at recorded times. It explicitly notes that these steps can improve the information base but cannot guarantee selection or citation.
- Name the concrete action
- Define what is measured in advance
- Make the source and responsible party visible
- State the limits of the conclusion
GEO in the information and customer journey
An AI answer may give a user a definition, help build a shortlist or let them click through to a source. Informational articles, service pages and organisation pages therefore belong together: each page type answers a different question and provides a different kind of evidence.
The knowledge base provides verifiable explanations, the service page describes possible implementation and the about page identifies who is responsible. Internal links make these relationships visible without repeating the same text across multiple URLs.
- Knowledge article: definition, source and limitation
- Service page: scope, process and next step
- Organisation page: identity and responsibility
- Methodology page: measurement unit and classification
Frequently asked questions
What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Without strong technical SEO, content and authority, GEO has little foundation.
Which AI systems are relevant?
These include ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity. Availability and use of sources differ by system.
Is GEO an official ranking factor?
No. GEO is a professional term for a set of technical, editorial, entity and measurement practices. Platforms publish their own requirements and do not disclose a general GEO score.
Do I need separate GEO pages?
Only when a page fully answers a distinct question or search intent. Repeating the same text in many variations does not increase its value as a source.
What is the difference between a brand mention and a citation?
A brand mention names the brand. A domain citation also refers to a source URL on the verified domain. SEOJuice reports these signals separately.
Can structured data get my business into an AI answer?
Structured data can clarify explicit information, but must match the visible page and cannot force selection.
